How to Eat Your Sunscreen

What’s the deal with sunscreen? What you use for sunscreen? Do you use a certain brand? What’s your biggest concerns when it comes to being out in the sun or using sunscreen?

The ingredients in commercial sunscreens often do more harm than good. Did you know that exposure to the sun isn’t a problem, it’s actually a benefit, if you feed your skin the right nutrients to get it ready for sun exposure? So, my approach is to protect my skin from the inside out. And of course, cover up or get out of the sun when my skin has had enough!

Most people think that sun exposure = skin cancer and that sunscreen = protection from skin cancer. But the research doesn’t back this up. In fact, it may suggest the opposite. Think about this. Skin cancer rates are rising despite more sunscreen use and reduced sun exposure in recent decades. I don’t avoid the san but rather I make a point to get sun exposure every day. I also avoid sunscreen for the most part, and just get out of the sun or cover up when I have had enough sun exposure for the day. Research shows the importance of sun exposure for adequate levels of Vitamin D and many other aspects of health. Wearing sunscreen greatly reduces vitamin D production, so that wasn’t the answer. I decided to follow the research and start protecting my skin from the inside out. And it worked.

Have you ever thought about EATING your sunscreen? Here’s how to do it and protect yourself from the sun from the inside out.

First, eat a real food diet with good fats. This includes Omega - 3s, Grass-fed Butter, Grass-fed Ghee, Coconut Oil, Avocado, Leafy Greens, and Vitamins. My favorite sources for these are Thrive Market and Azure Standard. You want to avoid things like processed foods, vegetable oils (this is the most important for sun exposure), grains and sugars.

Second, eat antioxidants. Focus on proteins, fats, veggies, and you can have some dark chocolate! Here are some essential oils that are high in antioxidants - Clove, Oregano, Cedarwood, Fennel, Coriander, Rose, Myrrh, Clary Sage, Thyme, Rosemary, Cinnamon, Frankincense, Roman Chamomile, Spikenard, Tea Tree — AND supplements like Alpha CRS with superfoods and Mito2Max with mitochondrial support.

Third, up your Vitamin D intake. I’ve noticed the biggest difference in how I feel from optimizing two things: omega-3 consumption and vitamin D levels. Most of the US is deficient in this hormone-producing vitamin, even with a good diet. Through blood testing several years ago, I discovered my Vitamin D levels were way below normal - even in the summer! Through years of experimenting and continual testing, I found that in order to get my levels up I had to get sun exposure and take supplemental vitamin D. Now, with my levels in the right range, my thyroid is doing great and I feel the best I’ve ever felt. I also don’t get sunburned anymore!
